The SUSTAIN project began in 2014 when Chris Kettle and Manuel Guariguata visited Madre de Dios to discuss a joint project on fragmentation genetics of Brazil nuts. Working together, this has lead to the application to Swiss supermarket COOP through the World Food System Centre Sustainability in Food Value Chains. The work has developed to explore the resilience of the Brazil nut trade in Peru and potential opportunites to develop links in Switzerland.
